5. Did Jesus really exist?

I’ve often heard the comment “I don’t believe in Jesus”, but what do people mean? On the face of it they are saying they don’t believe in Jesus! Yet when you begin to break it down perhaps what they are saying is “I don’t believe Jesus is the Son of God”. To simply state that they don’t believe in Jesus does not make any sense because quite simply Jesus is real. To say you don’t believe in Jesus is like saying you don’t believe in Australia. Just because you have never been there or choose not to believe in it does not mean that Australia will curl up and crawl away.

Australia exists. Fact.

Jesus walked on this earth. Fact.

Yes, fact. I know that the Christian faith is about ‘faith, being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see’ but there is also a historical basis for our faith.

There is more evidence to suggest that Jesus existed than Julius Caesar. There are other historical accounts of Jesus apart from in the Bible. No credible historian would deny the existence of Jesus of Nazareth.

The real burning questions isn’t “did Jesus really exist?” but “Who is Jesus?” – and that is another question entirely!
