Rising from Death are no Satanists

METAL heads Rising From Death are trying to drum up cash to fund a charity trip to Mexico. The five piece Swindon band, who are all Christians, formed the band four years ago. And since then they have been challenging non-Christians' views of the religion and Christian people's views on heavy metal.

Lead singer Jon Derry said: "When people hear we are a Christian heavy metal band they get quite curious Most people think of the devil. It's usually satanism and violence when it comes to heavy metal. The church we were at before weren't happy with the fact we had a band, and did try and stomp us out. So we changed churches. Kainos Christian Fellowship are a lot more supportive and encouraging about what we do. Our music always sends out a positive message and stays away from negative stuff that people think about when it comes to the music we play."

Rising From Death is made up of Jon Derry, 24, his brother Chris Derry aka Derrence, 20, Spider aka, Simon Jones, 21, Nathan Alderson, aka Spike, 19, and Allex Owen aka, Afi, also 19. Spider, who is the band's bassist, said  "he was surprised they hadn't got together sooner". He said: "We grew up together and have always liked the same sort of music. I haven't been a Christian all my life. It was only a few years ago that I was talking to friends and something was said and it all made sense. I went to church and everything seemed to fit in. Most people don't realise that we're a Christian band, but in a way it helps in opening people's minds and that's great. With the trip it was a good way of making a difference and travel to a new country, I think it would be a really rewarding experience."

At a recent church meeting at Lethbridge Primary School members of the band heard from charity Youth With A Mission. After hearing of its work members of the band decided they wanted to help. "The idea is to raise £3,000 and for us to go for two or three weeks to work out there, depending on how much we manage to get," Jon said.
